Really, though, see it. It’s surprisingly awesome. I was expecting another pallid fanboy wank along the line of the previous Tokyo Shock original production The Machine Girl, but instead director/FX wizard Yoshihiro Nishimura delivered a warped, progressively freakier spin on Cronenberg and Verhoeven — the New Flesh visits Nippon, social satire intact. Its apex is a sex show/girl auction where bizarre mutations are desirable, and if the rest of the film can’t quite hit the sympathetic freakishness of that setpiece, it’s still got a goodly amount of deliriously weird imagery (the Gatling gun that fires fists!) and hyper-imaginative violence to keep the brain buzzing. Really quite special, this one.
